How much to trust a Google Translate?
Google Translation or Machine translation can never be trusted for delivering proper translation from any language to any Language.
Sample this Google Translation
Source: English text |
The Indian Players should have made their brand count instead of making it discount. The Chinese moved up the ladder from product to brand as the Indians moved down from brand to commodity. They didn’t realize the smartphone is something consumers don’t just use but show off. |
Google translation into Hindi |
भारतीय खिलाड़ियों को छूट देने के बजाय उनकी ब्रांड गणना करना चाहिए था। चीन ने उत्पाद से ब्रांड तक की सीढ़ी ऊपर ले ली, क्योंकि भारतीय ब्रांडों से कमोडिटी तक चले गए। उन्हें नहीं पता था कि स्मार्टफोन कुछ उपभोक्ता हैं जो सिर्फ उपयोग नहीं करते हैं, लेकिन दिखाते हैं। |
The above translation by Google is a vast improvement over the past method of translation by word and joined for the sentence. It is also an improvement over Phrase-Based Translation which breaks input sentence into words and phrases for translation and joins together. This method of phrase-based translation also failed to give the meaningful or contextual translation.
Since October 2017, Google launched its latest improved translation method which will use automatic page translation where the advanced artificial intelligence understands the context and accordingly translate the overall page. The improvements in Machine translation allows translation of a page to get a gist of the content in the desired language.
Every effort to automate translation is good as it will lead to global communication that costs next to nothing and does not much time to process. At best it could be used as a reference material for self-reading and not for publishing.
How Machine Translation can be misused?
1. Take advantage of Speed:
The speed is so amazing that one is tempted to use this as a shortcut method to translate a large file and pass it on a professional translation. The machine-translated file can be rectified for errors and edited by a professional translator at a much lesser time than the normal time it takes for translation of the entire document. This is a half-baked stuff.
No doubt, Machine translation tool can process a large number of texts and documents at the click of a button. All you have to do is to open the translation tool, select and paste the document which is the source document in the source language text area and select whichever language you want to get the document translated. A client will be impressed that the job is done on time.
Whether you be transparent and tell the client that you will use machine translation as the reference for further edit by a professional to save time or just do not tell anything about the process, you will do injustice to the translation job since the quality of translation by using machine translation and post edit will always be suspect.
Our actual experience has actually proved that it takes more time to edit a machine translation than to do the translation of source document.
2. Take advantage Low Cost:
The cost of translation is nothing compared professional translation. In order to save cost, one is tempted to use machine translation and subsequently proofread the same for correction.
If cost is the criteria, it is okay to do. But the result of a poorly translated file can be negative. The reader will be confused about the message and it just won’t speak the language of the target audience. Machine translation does not know the emotions and culture and the stylistic differences,. Choice of words can be so wrong that it will affect the reader sensibilities.
What is missing in Machine Translation?
1. Quality:
The quality of translation should be just that it is not only accurate but adds value by bringing the tone, style, and creativity of the original into the translated copy. This only a professional translator can do.
2. Cultural orientation:
The translation using MT tool is robotic. It is insensitive to the market, environment, culture and the local peoples’ taste. A native translator makes a great difference to the translation by bringing in the flavor of local lingo in his translation, thus enabling better connection with the target group.
3. Creativity:
Flexibility and creativity are two aspects of communication that are most essential while translating for the market. This is because we deal with different regions and the same language should be treated differently for different regions.
Only a professional translator in native language understand the difference and will follow the style guide, mandatories, and terminology with variation in choice of words and phrases that speak the language of the target population.
